The problem we’re answering

The independent producers of Britain and Ireland — the family butchers, the pasture farmers, the farm shops — are being squeezed. Supermarket buying power, the loss of small abattoirs, planning rules that favour scale, and decades of marketing that taught people to buy on price per kilo rather than per nutrient. A lot of genuinely good food is hard to find precisely because the people making it are too busy making it to win the search-engine game.

So this is the public service: a single, trustworthy place to find them, organised by where you are and what you care about, with every entry checked against a primary source.

Why “honest”

Because the word is the whole promise. Every directory listing is honest because we verified it. Every article is honest because we cite real evidence and name real authors. Every event is honest because we link to the organiser’s own page. Every farmer story is honest because we name the person, photograph them, and quote them in their own words. If we can’t stand behind a sentence, it doesn’t go up. The methodology page sets out exactly how that works.

Where we stand

We are advocates, not neutral observers. When we feature a farmer or a butcher, we are on their side: we tell their story and we link to their shop. We are confident about it, but not strident — we make the case with specifics, not with anger. We are pro real food: grass-fed and pasture-raised meat, traditional breeds, whole-carcass butchery, the long slow craft of it. And we are honest about uncertainty. When the evidence is contested, we say so. When it changes, we update.

How we pay for it

Right now, we don’t take a penny from the producers we list. Inclusion is free and editorial. In time we may add genuinely useful paid features — an enhanced profile, a verified seal a butcher can put in their own window — but they will always be clearly marked, and they will never change whether or how a business is listed. Audience first, trust always, money last. That order is not negotiable.

Who’s behind it

HonestMeat is a small editorial operation covering Britain and Ireland. We’re building the named contributor team in public — farmers, butchers and writers who know this world from the inside — and their profiles will appear here as they join. Until then, research and verification carry the house byline, and the standards on the methodology page apply to every word.
